The Tata Sumo is an SUV produced by Indian automobile manufacturer Tata Motors from 1994 to 2019. During production, its name was changed to Sumo Victa and later to Sumo Gold.
The Sumo was released in 1994 as a 10-passenger, rear wheel drive SUV primarily intended for military and off-road use. [1] It was a great sales success, with over 100,000 Sumo cars sold through 1997. [2]
Sumo was based on Telcoline's Tata X2 body-on-frame platform [3] with a redesigned and strengthened rear axle to adapt it to off-road use with part-time all-wheel drive (rear-wheel drive with traction only in off-road conditions) with a grafting system, electric control at speeds up to 60 km / h, a self-locking rear diff 2008 tata sumo erential and manual locking of the front hubs, after which a fully automatic solution was replaced. The front suspension is a double oscillating trapezoid and torsion beam, while Salisbury beam type rear axles with parabolic leaf springs and anti-roll bar were applied at the rear. The front brakes are a ventilated disc, combined with the rear, which is a self-adjusting drum.
In the Indian market, the rear wheel drive version was sold to the civilian market, the 4 wheel drive version was sold to fleets and the Indian Army. In the export market, the 4WD version was regularly sold alongside the 2WD.
Prior to Sumo, the Indian market was stagnant, with the most modern cars in the same class produced by Mahindra and Mahindra, primarily based on original Willys Jeep models. After the release of Tata Sumo quickly captured the main segment of the passenger car market in India.
The name Sumo comes from Sumanta Moolgaokara, former managing director of Tata Motors. [4]
The engine was the same as the Telcoline: 2.0-litre (1948 cc) naturally aspirated four-cylinder diesel Peugeot XD88, manufactured under license by Tata Motors in India, with two valves per cylinder and prechamber indirect injection, producing 63 horsepower . Transmission - 5-speed manual G76.
In 1996, the Sumo lineup was replenished with a new, more refined version of the Deluxe. In 1998, Tata introduced the 2.0-litre turbocharged Peugeot XD88 diesel engine to the export market, the new engine is Euro 2 homologated and has 92 horsepower.
In 2001, the Sumo Deluxe Turbo was introduced in India with a 2.0 TDi engine. [five]
An updated version called Tata Sumo Spacio was released in 2000. [6] Sumo Spacio introduced a new naturally aspirated 2956 cc direct injection diesel engine (known as the 65 horsepower Tata 4SP) based on the Tata 407 light commercial vehicle. Sumo's main changes have been in the transmission. With a longer wheelbase than the earlier version, the Spacio used a different transmission, rear axle and tires specifically for better fuel economy. Aside from the no-frills version, a notable visual difference between the Sumo Spacio and the old Sumo was the presence of round headlights instead of rectangular ones.
A soft top version of the Spacio called the Spacio ST was also introduced for rural markets. [7] The Spacio ST was also available in 4WD.
With the release of the Sumo Spacio, the previous Sumo remains in production, with higher list prices and 2.0-litre naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines (since 2001). In fact, Spacio is a cheaper version of the classic sumo.
In early 2007, Tata Motors released the Spacio Gold Plus. [8] This version received the 3.0 turbo engine of the 4SP family and offered increased power to 70 horsepower (at 3000 rpm) and 223 Nm of torque (at 2200 rpm).
Sumo Victa, released in 2004 [9], is an updated version of the previous model Tata Sumo Spacio. With all new interiors, the car features a tachometer, multi-function instrument cluster, power steering, power windows on all four doors, keyless entry and a host of other comfort features.
