16th Century Bible
Rare early printed Bible of the 16th century will be on display for one day
On Wednesday, May 24, only one day in the exposition of the State Historical Museum of the Southern Urals will be exhibited a rare book of the 16th century - "Ostrog Bible", published by the first printer Ivan Fedorov. The museum will make this priceless gift to the townspeople in honor of the celebration of the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture.
The Ostrog Bible is the first complete edition of the Bible in the Church Slavonic language. The book was published in the city of Ostrog in 1581. The circulation at that time was considered huge - according to some sources, from 1000 to 1500 copies, of which only 350 books have been fully or partially preserved to date. Among them is the Chelyabinsk "Ostrog Bible".
In the State Historical Museum of the South Urals, this exhibit is exhibited for the first time and for a short time, just for one day, since it requires special storage conditions - in a special darkened room in which a certain level of humidity and air temperature is maintained.
The book is 16th Century Bible quite voluminous - it has 628 pages. Experts note that the Bible uses six different fonts in two languages - Greek and Church Slavonic. Small but legible letters are printed on white paper in black and red ink. Months and tables of contents are highlighted in red.
The book contains an engraving depicting King David, which was made on paper of the XVIII century and, apparently, was inserted later. There are also handwritten inscriptions on the pages. Four of them are made in cursive writing from the 17th century and one was made in the 18th century. Judging by these notes, the owner of the "Ostrog Bible" in the 17th century was Savrinets Kernazhitsky, and at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries it belonged to a resident of the Nizhniy Tagil plant, Grigory Golovanov.
In the 18-19 centuries, the publication was restored according to the understanding of its owners: the paper was stitched with white threads, the book block was cut off, there are traces of the restoration of the paper itself. The original binding of the book has been lost and replaced with cardboard covers, the spine is made of fabric. In general, the artifact, which is almost 450 years old, has been preserved quite well, according to the curators of the Historical Museum.
Unfortunately, it is not clear when and how the "Ostrog Bible" entered the museum funds, but this in no way diminishes its cultural and historical value, because this book is a subject of national importance.
It will be possible to admire the "Ostrog Bible" on May 24 in the Hall of History and Folk Life of the State Historical Museum of the Southern Urals from 10:00 to 18:00.
